Ping

Mallard Duck

Ping was admitted to our hospital in 2009 as a young duckling afflicted with a physical growth deformity colloquially known as “Angel Wing.” Angel Wing is a condition that impacts young ducks and geese when they are growing and typically occurs in populations that have been fed unhealthy foods (ie: bread) by people. While ducks and geese love bread, it is not nutritionally complete and these animals will often eat it to the exclusion of healthy foods. These birds wings will typically grow at a very rapid rate faster than the body can support. This causes the wings to rotate outwards. Unfortunately, birds with angel wing are rendered permanently flightless.

Did You Know?

It is easy to tell a male and female Mallard apart! Males display a bright green iridescent head. Females are uniformly mottled brown. Juveniles most closely resemble the females until they go through their first molt. Both genders display a beautiful iridescent blue/purple speculum (wing patch) outlined in black and white feathers.
