Marcus

Great Horned owl

Marcus was admitted to our hospital in 2005 following an entanglement in fishing line which was put out at a local marina as a deterrent for gulls. Unfortunately, the fishing line caused permanent damage to the tendons of Marcus’ wing and he is no longer able to fly with the symmetry needed for successful hunting in the wild.

Did You Know?

On Long Island, Great Horned Owls adopt an unconventional nesting season right in the middle of winter! These birds will typically begin to establish their nesting territories in December, lay eggs shortly after Christmas and will hatch and raise their young in February and March! Their insulating feathers and well-selected and protected nest locations in tall evergreens help to keep both parents and babies warm in the winter weather.
