Hatch

Eastern Box Turtle

Hatch was admitted to our hospital in 2009. His mother was a patient who laid eggs in our care. Despite proper incubation, Hatch hatched from his egg with a deformity to his shell. This deformity impacts his ability to properly close his shell for protection from predators.

Did You Know?

Eastern Box Turtles are terrestrial turtles with a highly domed shell. They get their name the Box Turtle for the hinged plastron (bottom of the shell) which allows the shell to close completely like a box! This adaptation helps to protect the turtle from predation.

Sponsor Hatch

Symbolically adopt one or more of our resident animals for yourself or as a gift to someone you love. Adoptions help us to provide professional care for our ambassador animals including veterinary visits, enclosure enhancements, high-quality food and enrichment.

Help Us Support Wildlife

We rely on donations from the community to provide the best possible rescue, care and rehabilitation to Long Island’s Wildlife.
