Sheldon

Common Musk Turtle

Sheldon, our ambassador Common Musk Turtle, was found in a box abandoned outside a pet store in Queens. While Musk Turtles are a wild species found on Long Island, we suspect Sheldon was either taken from the wild as a youngster or perhaps purchased as a pet. Sheldon is unable to be released as his origin is unknown.  Additionally, he is tame and looks to people for food.

Did You Know?

Common Musk Turtles are also known as the Stinkpot! When threatened, they have the ability to release a foul, musky odor from their scent glands located on the sides of their shell.
