Baby & Lady

Red-tailed Hawks

Baby and Lady, our duo of Red-tailed Hawks, arrived at our hospital in 2001 as separate admissions. Lady was admitted as a juvenile following a vehicle strike which caused irreparable damage to her eye, requiring removal. Baby was admitted that same year as a nestling with severe head trauma which required extensive rehabilitation for several months. Despite our best efforts to maintain Baby’s wildness, Baby was too acclimated to people for release to the wild.

Did You Know?

Red-tailed hawks are named for the rusty red color of their tail. However, they don’t get this color until their first molt when they are a year old. Juveniles have a light brown colored tail with horizontal stripes.
