Jasper

Diamondback Terrapin

Jade & Jasper were brought to our hospital as a surrender from the public in 2015. These siblings were found as hatchling terrapins in a backyard pool shortly after they hatched from their nest in 2011. Unfortunately, the finder of the turtles kept the two turtles, illegally, as pets for the next four years. Due to their time spent in captivity, these two turtles are tame and exhibit shell growth deformities as a result of poor nutrition and husbandry. Diamondback Terrapins are an iconic species on Long Island. These turtles help us teach the public the importance of their species and to always keep wildlife WILD!

Did You Know?

Diamondback Terrapins are named for the diamond-shaped scute patterns on their shell.
