Scaup Duck Gets a Second Chance
Our Hotline rang early one December morning from a homeowner in Massapequa that had just witnessed this beautiful duck get dropped by a hawk, bounce off his roof, and then crash down in the backyard! We immediately dispatched a rescue volunteer to help this poor bird.
This diving duck, a Greater Scaup, had a puncture wound to his head, a laceration on its bill, internal bleeding, and an injury to one of his toes. With daily medication and wound care, this duck healed from his injuries & was able to return to his flock.
It’s actually quite rare for us to admit animals to our Hospital that have been attacked by natural predators. About 90% of our intakes are due to human-caused reasons such as vehicle collisions or attacks from domestic animals.
We’re glad this duck wasn’t left outside suffering and is now back home in nature!
