Patient Spotlight

Yellow-crowned Night Heron
Earlier this month, we admitted a Yellow-crowned Night Heron from Rockville Centre. Our rehabilitators found the heron to be malnourished and having difficulty with balance and coordination. Initially, the heron was too weak to eat on its own but has been improving daily! Now, the bird is able to walk, fly short distances, and feed itself. While the bird still has weight to gain and is not yet fully recovered, we’re hopeful this stunning bird can be released back to the wild next month.
Night Herons forage for food by silently standing still on the sides of shallow bodies of water as they patiently wait for their prey to approach. Their diet consists of crabs, crayfish, fish and other small animals. Many species of crabs and crayfish are nocturnal so these herons forage all throughout the day & night! As seen in our patient here, night herons develop a few elongated feathers on their head during the breeding season which are used in courtship displays. Yellow-crowned Night Herons nest along the coast and are commonly found throughout the south shore of Long Island!
