Woodpecker Patient
Did you know that Long Island is home to 5 different species of woodpeckers? Woodpeckers have unique zygodactyl feet which means they have 2 toes facing forward and 2 toes facing backward-ideal for grasping & climbing tree bark! In early spring, you can frequently hear the drumming sounds of various woodpecker species as they search for food, carve their nest cavities, and communicate to one another establishing territories. Woodpeckers rely on both sound & smell to find prey. They often tap on trees to listen for sounds that indicate wood-boring insects hidden beneath the bark!
