Solomon’s 15th Anniversary
Our ambassador Barred Owl, Solomon, has been with us for 15 years! In 2009, as a young owl in Florida, Solomon was hit by a car which resulted in a wing fracture and permanent loss of vision in his left eye. He was unable to be released due to compromised vision, but we were fortunate to be able to provide him with a permanent home at our center. Through our education outreach programs, Solomon has helped us to teach countless people about his species.
Barred Owls prefer deep, old forests, especially those near water. In addition to small mammals, these raptors hunt amphibians and fish! Due to habitat loss, Barred Owls are seldom seen on Long Island, but a few have been sighted in recent years in NYC’s Central Park, Inwood Hill Park & Pelham Bay Park.

Oiled Pigeon Recovers
This pigeon found himself in serious trouble after accidentally coming into contact with improperly disposed cooking oil. When the pigeon arrived at our hospital, its feathers were soaked in the oil. Normal and healthy feathers keep birds warm, repel water, and allow for agile flight. This oiled pigeon was grounded, wet, cold, and completely helpless.
After stabilization at our hospital, our rehabilitators gave the pigeon several baths with specially concentrated solutions of Dawn dish soap to remove the oil. Thanks to a very generous donation from our Amazon wish list, we now have a brand-new small animal dryer that is used to quickly dry animals after they receive Dawn baths! After cleaning & drying, the pigeon was good as new! The feathers were clean and once again would keep this bird warm, dry, and allow for flight. After a little more surrportive care, the pigeon was released back to the wild with a second chance!
